Betfair KYC Without the Drama: What They Ask and How to Pass
The bet won, the balance looks right, and the withdrawal comes back asking for one more document, or a second proof that looks like the first. Here is the order of Betfair's checks, the papers it turns away, and what four brokers add.
Betfair's ID and KYC checks come in stages: an electronic check first, documents (one photo ID, then proof of address) only if that falls short, proof of where your betting money came from only for some customers, and completed verification before any withdrawal. Its stated aim is four hours per upload, with 24 the longest it mentions. All four brokers here also verify you before a withdrawal at the latest, whatever you pay with. Check the current terms.
Betfair account verification in five stages, from the first check to the withdrawal gate
1. The electronic check. Usually this is all a customer needs, Betfair says. Outside the UK, clause 5.4 ties the trigger to regulatory requirements and lets it fall at various stages.
2. Documents, only if asked. Photo ID first, then proof of address if wanted. Formats and the checklist are in the Betfair registration guide.
3. Source of funds, for some customers. Where your betting money came from; more below.
4. Checks for as long as the account exists. Clauses 5.5 and 5.6 say Betfair must run checks "during the whole time that you have an Account" and may restrict it if a request goes unanswered; an account that is suspended while checks are open has its own page. Trustpilot reviewers (Trustpilot does not fact-check reviews) report proof-of-address requests after successful deposits and withdrawals.
5. The check before any withdrawal. Clause 7.7.2 holds every withdrawal until verification is complete. In the UK and Ireland, new customers also face a 30-day deposit cap and no withdrawals until fully verified (the registration guide has the figure). The closed-loop rule and the other reasons a withdrawal is blocked are on the payments page.
The papers Betfair turns away
What Betfair refuses is named in its help pages, which are written around UK and Irish customers (two photo ID entries are Irish cards); no rest-of-world list turned up.
Photo ID it refuses: the Age Card, the Applications Registration Card, bus passes, company ID, credit cards, NHS cards, paper driving licences, the Public Service Card, student ID, the UK Citizens Card.
Proof of address it refuses: CONDIS bank statements, court summons, invoices, National Insurance, NHS or private healthcare letters, payslips, P60 and P45, receipts, university letters.
A payslip fails as proof of address, yet Betfair's source-of-funds help names payslips as evidence of where your money came from. Same paper, two jobs, accepted for one.
When Betfair asks where the money came from
The help article opens with "at times": it may be necessary to ask you to confirm the source of your betting funds. "Not all customers" go through it, and Betfair says it will contact you if you do. Without the evidence it may restrict the account.
The evidence it names: a payslip, director remuneration, dividends or a pension; a bank or savings statement with consistent incoming values from an identifiable source; a trust deed; dated proof of an award or payment.
What sets it off? No published figure turned up, so any rule of thumb about deposits or winnings is a guess.
Who reads the upload, and when
The review desk works between 7 am and 2 am, Betfair says, and documents sent while it is closed wait until it reopens. No time zone is stated, so check the current hours.
Answer the request you got, not the one you fear.
The brokers' checks, set beside Betfair's
Every cell is the operator's own statement, read from published pages: a reading, not an account test. BetInAsia's come from archived copies, so check the current terms throughout. A broker must also reach the venue you want, and the coverage finder shows which do.
| Operator | Documents it names | Review time it states | One thing to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Betfair | One unexpired photo ID; more only if asked | Aims for four hours; some take up to 24 | Desk open 7 am to 2 am, time zone not stated |
| BetInAsia, from archived pages | Photo ID, a selfie holding it if required, a bank statement or utility bill not older than 3 months | Temporarily Approved after upload; its team has 24 hours | Can use the platform but not withdraw meanwhile |
| AsianConnect | ID card, passport or driving licence; address proof within 2 months, no mobile phone bills; selfie or video | Says typically 2 to 5 minutes; manual review possible | Says it may ask at any time |
| MadMarket | Same list as BetInAsia | Same status; its team has 24 hours | Withdrawals blocked meanwhile; says an algorithmic and manual check runs before each |
| Sportmarket | Passport, national ID or driving licence; proof of residence within 3 months; selfie or liveness check | Says most finish within a few minutes | Source of funds and source of wealth checks may follow |
Not for you if a selfie or video step is a dealbreaker: all four brokers name one in some form (BetInAsia and MadMarket only if required).
The four brokers' ID triggers are compared on the brokers page; what a betting broker is starts from scratch. A broker adds its own checks and replaces none: a direct Betfair account keeps its own. A broker tool does not reopen Betfair's country list, and each broker keeps its own (check the current terms and local law). Whether the extra layer pays is a question of how the routes into the exchange compare.
What ID-free betting claims leave out
Some sites advertise ID-free betting. Betfair's terms let it ask for ID at any time before or after opening an account (clause 4.1.12, archived copy), and a withdrawal needs completed verification. The UKGC's licence condition 17.1.1 requires licensees to verify a customer's name, address and date of birth before that customer may gamble; other markets differ, so check local law.
Each of the four brokers here says verification is required before a withdrawal at the latest. Sportmarket adds that crypto deposits need full verification, and ID checks apply whatever the payment method. Whatever the sales page says, the check still stands between you and your withdrawal.
BetInAsia says it never shares customer details with the bookmakers or third parties it cooperates with, and MadMarket's FAQ uses the same words. AsianConnect says verification runs once, through its own account, with no additional personal information passed to each bookmaker, adding "unless legally or operationally required" in its privacy FAQ. These concern who sees your documents, not how many you send.
A request has arrived: five moves before you reply
- Find the one item named.
The message names the document. Send that, and only that.
- Hold it against your registration.
Name, date of birth and address, all three as typed; walking through the sign-up form field by field shows what each box expects. The address on your documents and the place you log in from can be set against each other, so keep your registered address and your login country the same (what the terms say about where you log in from).
- Repair the file, not the story.
Unexpired photo ID, a separate document for the address, a format Betfair takes. Before you upload, a shorter pre-flight list is worth a minute.
- Upload while the desk is open.
Send it after checking the desk's current hours, never in the small hours. Uploader users get an email update: watch the inbox and the spam folder.
- If it comes back refused, change one thing.
Read the reason if there is one, fix that item, and ask live chat if it does not say. Never open a second account or edit your details to fit the paper: clause 6.1 allows one account per person, and clause 11.2.7 names false registration information as a ground for action.
Questions people ask
Do I always have to send documents?
Not always at Betfair: it says the electronic check can usually verify a customer without them.
Can I withdraw while my documents are being reviewed?
Not at Betfair (clause 7.7.2). At BetInAsia and MadMarket the Temporarily Approved status blocks withdrawals too, and every broker requires verification before one.
Does using a broker change the ID checks?
It adds a set. On the pages we read, a broker's tool sits inside an account you hold with the broker, not a Betfair account, under the broker's own terms, so its checks apply. The through-a-broker guide covers how that structure works.
Are the checks different outside the UK and Ireland?
In part. Verification triggers differ outside the UK, and the deposit cap and document help are worded for UK and Irish customers. Ask live chat which papers it takes for your country, and check local law.
